Bridge Dedication
Thu. Jul 22nd 2010

On Tuesday July 21st, The members of Brookville Timberlake VFD gathered with friends, relatives and fellow firefighters for the Firefighter Carter Martin memorial bridge dedication ceremony.

June 22, 1995  was a day and night of torrential rains,at approximately 10:30 pm members of the Brookville Timberlake VFD responded to the  buffalo creek bridge on route 460 for cars stranded in high water. After unsuccessfully trying to reach the vehicles with ladder 12 . The decision was made to try to reach the cars on foot. Carter Martin first Assistant Chief along with several other members tied off a rope to the bumper of the engine and began to wade into the current. Carter was the first into the water and was going toward the cars when upstream the dam at Timberlake broke causing the water to rise several feet suddenly causing Carter to lose his balance and be swept downstream. heroic efforts were made to revive him but unfortunately Carter lost his life in the line of duty.

Carter Martin was a member of the Brookville Timberlake VFD, career firefighter for the City of Lynchburg a substitute teacher and assistant football coach at his alma mater Brookville High School. The best way to sum up the ceremony was by 2 people who spoke about Carter  one was by his daughter Caitlin who was 2 at the time of the tragedy, she spoke of how the members of the fire department became her adoptive dads and how firefighters are truly a family. Robbie Ore fellow firefighter reminded those in the audience that when they drove across the bridge and saw the sign not to remember how Carter died but how he lived his life, his passion for the fire service, football his community and family. Carter was a true local Hero who's legacy will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him as a firefighter, coach and father.
